Picnic Tables.Replacing a damaged awning on your caravan or camper will give it an instant facelift! Caravan awnings, especially vinyl ones, do not tend to last for very long, especially on vans exposed to the elements on a constant basis. Replacing the vinyl can be done in two ways — either replacing the roll and vinyl together, or just the vinyl. You can often save money by just replacing the vinyl, but beware, because while the job may look relatively simple, getting the old vinyl off and the new vinyl on the right way and sitting in the right position can be very difficult.
First, unlock the safety lock and turn the roll to remove some of the tension. Return the safety lock to the locked position. Fit a pin to lock the torsion assembly so the tension is not released when assembly is later removed.
Then fit a pin such as the shaft of a large rivet into the torsion assembly on the opposite end that is, the one that does not have the locking tab fitted, on the left as you look at the side of the caravan to ensure it does not later release the tension. The awning roll has to be removed from the awning legs. This Dometic awning roll is secured to the legs at each end by a collar. The bolts that secure the collars to the awning legs need to be removed, and then you should be able to remove the collars from the top of the awning legs.
Now remove the self-tapping screws that hold the spline in the sail track on the caravan wall. Before you go any further, make sure you have something soft to place the roll on when it is removed from the caravan so the new vinyl is not damaged while fitting it to the roll.
The next step should be done with a helper. Unfurl the vinyl from the roll and slide the pull strap out of its channel and put aside. While you get the old vinyl off, you should prepare the new vinyl by putting it out in the sun for a while so it softens and is easier to stretch while slotting the splines into the grooves of the roll.
Fit a pair of vise grip pliers to the shaft of the roll and drill out the rivets securing the left-hand side torsion assembly. Now you should be able to pull out the assembly from the roll. With the torsion assembly removed from the roll, the old vinyl can now be removed. Sometimes the vinyl slides out easily, other times it can take a lot of effort to remove it.
An F-clamp is useful for gaining a better purchase on the vinyl, and reduces the chances of you tearing it while trying to remove it from the roll.
Firstly, file down any sharp edges in the grooves of the roll so the vinyl does not tear when sliding it on the roll.
Apply either soapy water or a light lubricant such as WD onto the spline casings so the new vinyl slides on more easily. Now to the hardest part of this job: fitting the splines to the grooves of the roll and sliding the vinyl on.
Make sure you fit the vinyl on the correct way; you want it to be able to roll up counter-clockwise when fitted so that the outer surface of the vinyl is facing up. Take your time to picture how the vinyl will roll up on the van — this will save a lot of heartache later if you fit it the wrong way. Now insert the splines to the grooves.
Just like removing the old vinyl, this can be easy or very difficult or anything in between. Sometimes, securing a clamp on the vinyl makes fitting the new awning on to the roll easier. An F-clamp holding the vinyl can help to get a better purchase on the material and make it easier to slide it on. Slide the vinyl up to the marks you made on the roll earlier.
Fit the torsion assembly back on, making sure the grooves in the torsion assembly match up to the grooves on the roll. Rivets are fitted to the torsion assembly, the vinyl rolled up and the roll reassembled on the van in reverse if the disassembly procedure. Roll up the vinyl on the roll, checking again that you have fitted it the correct way around.
Now, with your helper, slide the spline into the sail track on the caravan and place the ends of the roll in their grooves in the legs. Re-fit the screws that secure the spline and secure the collars on top of the roll ends. Remove the pin you fitted earlier to the torsion assembly. Unlock the safety lock and roll out the awning, then slide the pull strap back in. While this may appear to be a simple process, as noted above, it can require considerable patience when it comes to removing the old vinyl and fitting the new piece.Bought a Camptech porch awning which came with free storm straps.
The delivery was efficient and even though the instruction manual was missing, the customer care team were most helpful and sent them on. Would use this company again and look forward to using the Awning when things return to normal again. Many thanks and would recommend. Very easy to order and very quick delivery. But sadly when delivered it was the wrong size.
I called customer service and spoke to Belle who asked me to email a photo of what had been delivered. Within 30 mins she had arranged for the wrong awning to be collected and said she would keep me in touch with the delivery of the correct one. Of which she did the new one was delivered within a few days. Sadly due to lockdown we have been unable to use it.
But from what we have seen it is of good quality for a very good price and the free storm straps are an added bonus. I can't reccomend Belle's customer service enough. We pitched the new awning just before lockdown in Wales. Disappointed we centre use it yet as we are very pleased with it. It's spacious and full of light with very attractive curtains. Sturdy frame and storm straps an added bonus! With the greatest regret we cannot use our awning right at this minute ; but as soon as we can I know we will be really happy with it because it is just like our friends.
I also spoke to one of your guyswho was really helpfully getting me where I needed to be with picking the right awning for us.
Ordered this after the recent storms and I am very happy with the result. Can't fault the service and quality of the product.Part Number fiamma-caravanstore-awning. Brand Fiamma. Pack size 1. This is a step-by-step guide that will walk with you through re-tensioning the spring in your recreational vehicle's awning. It is assumed that you have already taken down the awning, released the tension and the torsion assembly, and replaced the locks and caps before re-tensioning the spring.
Pro-Tec Caravan Towing Jacket Cover
But first, take a look at the tools and materials that you need to prepare for this job. When you release the tension in the spring, the cotter pin that is inserted in the holes in the awning arms are removed. The cotter pins are the ones that lock the spring tension securely while taking down the RV awning.
Now that you are going to re-tension the spring, it's time to insert it back after you have reinstalled the torsion assembly.
First, get a hold of the tube with the aid of a pair of vice grips. Make sure to insert rubber tubes on the jaws of your vice grips or wrap it with rubber pieces so the tube's finish won't be scratched. Have someone ready to help you in re-inserting the cotter pin while you hold the tubes still. Now that everything is in place for the cotter pin to be inserted, you will first need to wind the spring by the number of turns that is suited for your RV awning model or brand, and in the direction indicated in your tube's end cap.
It's best to check your RV awning manual to determine the number of turns you'll need winding up your spring. Generally, it will take six turns for awning lengths of 8 to 12 feet, seven turns for 13 to 14 feet, eight turns for 15 to 16 feet, 10 turns for 17 to 18 feet, 11 turns for 19 to 21 feet, and 12 turns for 22 to 25 feet.
This, however, will still depend on the model of the RV awning that you own. Make sure to refer to your manual or contact the manufacturer if you're not certain. When you are done winding the spring, have your helper insert the cotter pin to hold that tension in the spring. Just like in process of releasing the tension, the cotter pin helps in holding or locking the spring to the desired tension.
When you are done with locking the desired spring tension, it's time to replace the arm and bolts. The arm and bolts were disassembled when you released the spring tension.
Now that you're done with re-tensioning the spring, it's time to replace the awning arm on the end piece and put back the bolt and secure it using a wrench. The last step is to reinstall the RV awning.
